Intermediate Phonics/Reading/Writing
HERO Class Syllabus for 2008-2009
Course Description:
This class is a continuation of the Beginning Phonics course using some of the tools we learned and applying them in this class. We will continue to focus on the phonogram sounds. Depending on the class, we may start further on in the book for the weekly spelling tests. More sentence writing and oral reading will occur compared to the beginner class. This class is for the student who is reading, but needs more practice and help with phonics, and writing skills. There will be $5.00 fee for a special learning log that will be used for daily dictation. (This is a year long class).

Grading Information:
The students will be graded on attendance, participation, and performance. Grades will be based on percentages. To get 100%, the student would have to never miss class, get 100% on all the spelling tests, and particpate as much as possible. Participation is when the student is showing interrest, paying attention, and engaging in writing. Performance involves showing knowledge learned (quiz scores, memorization of the 70 phonograms, and sentence writing for homework). The total percentage grade from attendance, participation, and performance are added together and then the three percentages are divided by three to get the final percentage grade.
Grading Scale:
Participation: 0% to 100%
Performance: 0% to 100%
Guidelines for Success:
· Class participation Students are encouraged to participate in class dictation and phonogram memorization activities. Following directions and rules are also very important.
· Class attendance Students are strongly encouraged to attend class each week. The student will miss out on dictation and possibly a quiz.
· Written Assignment Criteria As the year progresses, sentence writing will be given out for homework.
· Late Work If the work is not turned in on the due date, it may be turned in the next class time for a 50% grade, after that the grade becomes a 0%.
Class Assignment Schedule Once spelling quizzes start up, students will need to study each week the dictation words they learned for a quiz the following week. Parents will be informed by a note when this takes place.
