Course Description: This is a beginner level watercolor class, introducing students to the tools and techniques of watercolor.   The first semester will focus on watercolor basics, color properties and mixing, brushes and steps to planning and composing paintings.  A variety of subject will be painted during the year.  Weekly homework assignments will be given.  A $20 material fee will be charged each semester to cover the cost of materials given to or used by the students in the class.

Grading Information 1st semester:  51% Attendance (3% per class) and 49% homework assignments.

Guidelines for Success:  Work will be graded on effort.

First Semester Topics:

Week 1:  Introduction to watercolors and color properties (hue, value and transparency).

Week 2:  Color mixing vs. color layering.

Week 3:  Value paintings. Warm vs. cool colors.

Week 4:  Exploring brushes.

Week 5:  Washes, wet into wet painting etc.

Week 6:  Texture techniques.

Week 7:  Utilizing negative and positive painting (fall leaf composition). Watercolor pencils.          

Week 8:  Use of white in watercolor. Intro to lifting colors.

Week 9:  Paint a fall scene or daisies.

Week 10:  Still life.   

Week 11:  Trees and mountains.

Week 12: Paint a winter scene.

Week 13: Painting in another artist’s style (e.g. Monet or Van Gogh like).

Week 14 & 15: Christmas theme. Painting cards and bookmarks.

Week 16 & 17: Tropical Fish
