Suggested sources:

  • Michaels has a small selection of art supplies and from week to week puts different items on sale at least 25% off, as well as providing a newspaper coupon for 40% off the regular price of a single item
  • Blick Art and Craft has a better selection of high quality supplies and a knowledgeable staff, and their prices overall are quite good and lower than Michaels; however, their closest location is across from Rosedale Mall, so that may not be convenient

Grading information:

The percentage grade for this class includes 3 points per homework assignment: 1 pt for completion, 1 pt for turning in on time, and 1 pt for workmanship. Late assignments may always be turned in, but the on time point can be given only for projects turned in on the due date. No exceptions – plan ahead. The point is not an “extra credit” point; it is part of the total points available for the course.

Guidelines for success:

Class participation – this class is very hands on and requires the ability to work well with others

Class attendance – each week new subject matter is introduced so regular class attendance is strongly encouraged; many times successful completion of the homework assignment depends on a concept introduced in class that day, and due to the nature of the co-op situation, it is extremely difficult to go over the material outside of class for someone who misses a class

Written assignments – this is a skill development course, and those skills cannot be mastered in one hour a week. It is essential that you provide time in your regular home schooling schedule for the student to complete the homework assignments.

Class assignment schedule:

Assignments are written out in a homework assignment book provided to the student the first week of class. There is an assignment every week.

Art show

There is a non-juried art show at the end of the second semester, allowing your student to show case his or her work. For this show, we request at least one drawing representing work in class, with a maximum of four drawings entered. Two of the four drawings may be non-HERO related work, and they must not have been previously displayed.
